Visit from the Nurse and Paramedic to the Monkeys and Giraffes class 21/03/18

Monkeys and Giraffes had a visit from Charlotte the nurse and Carly the paramedic. They talked to us about their jobs and how they help people.

Carly talked to us about driving the ambulance and getting to people’s houses quickly. She told us what to do when we call 999, and how important it is to know your address and to know how to unlock our door in case of emergency.

They showed us the nurse’s uniform, badge, scissors, calculator, clock, watch and pens. Both a nurse and a paramedic have a pen with a light to look at your throat or eyes. To check your temperature they use a thermometer that can go in your ear or on your head. We looked at the thermometer and heard it make a beeping sound. We also found out about, and tried out a machine for your finger, which measures how fast your heart is beating and how much oxygen is in your blood. Nurses and paramedics also look at your blood pressure. We saw how it pumps up your arm and gives it a squeeze. We tried the blood pressure measure. We saw Carly’s special scissors that can cut through clothes and even shoes!

We practised asking questions and talked about all the things we learned.
