Reading at Carlton Road Academy
Reading is of the highest importance at Carlton Road Academy; it is the key to the rest of the curriculum. As such, we encourage all children to read for at least ten minutes every day.

Every child will have at least two books:

A book to read that they have chosen:
Your child will be given the opportunity to choose a book that they are interested in. It is a book that they have chosen for themselves, but we would not necessarily expect them to read it independently. Instead we ask that you read it with them, encourage them to look at the pictures and discuss what is going on. You may want to ask them questions about it and predict the ending or talk about the topic.

A book-banded book:
Your child will also be given a book that is ‘book-banded’. This simply means that your child’s reading age/level has been assessed and matched to books that your child will be able to read the majority of, independently.

If your child is an early reader, then he/she will also be given a phonetically decodable book. This will be a book that is matched to the child’s individual phonic capability, which means they should be able to read it independently. However, we would still encourage you, the parents/carers, to listen to your child, prompting where necessary.
