In term 3 of this year some of the children were asked to participate in a STEM project. The project is used to inform children about engineering and to encourage children to pursue a career in this field. There were 6 children from reception, year one and year two that participated. Their task was to answer the question ‘If you were an engineer what would you do?’ The children met an engineer through an online interview- Miriam Christofeletti who is a robotics engineer. They then needed to think of a problem that they encounter in everyday life and think of an invention to solve this. The children were very creative and thought of ways to get to school quicker, a robot to help the police and a rug that turned into a cushion if you fell onto it out of bed.
Three of the children were shortlisted for the East midlands region and two children went on to win first place and were given regional awards for their inventions. We were invited to the awards ceremony at the University of Herefordshire where the two winning children and their families met engineers and were presented with awards.
All children were given a certificate for taking part and these were presented in our Star of the week assembly. Well done to all of you, what a fantastic result, your hard work and creativity paid off!
